Accessibility at the Zoo

We work hard to make sure Te Nukuao Wellington Zoo is a place where everyone feels welcome. We have staff and systems in place to ensure a trip to the Zoo is accessible for as many people as possible.

Te Nukuao is New Zealand’s first Zoo, and Wellington’s oldest conservation organisation, caring for animals since 1906. Located in the Wellington town belt, our Zoo was built on a steep hill that can be challenging for some to maneuver.

Please contact us before your visit with any access or support questions to let us know how we can make your trip as pleasant as possible. You can reach our team on 04 381 6755 or at wellingtonzoo@wellingtonzoo.com.

Caregivers

Caregivers of disabled persons are given complimentary entry to the Zoo upon presentation of suitable supporting documentation or identification.

Mobility parking

We have four designated mobility car parks in the Newtown Park car park right next to the Zoo, and one right outside the REX tremendous cafe at the entrance.

Wheelchairs

Wheelchairs are available free of charge – just ask our friendly Visitor Advisors when you arrive. There are toilets with wheelchair access throughout the Zoo. The Zoo is on a hill, and our Visitor Advisors can show you which pathways are more accessible.

Assistance dogs

Assistance dogs are welcome at the Zoo but must have proof of vaccination and please be aware that there are some areas they won't be able to visit. Please contact us for more information.

Accessibility Report

Be.Lab renewed our Gold Accessibility rating in 2022. This certification is awarded in recognition of Wellington Zoo providing an accessible and safe space for all visitors. Learn more here.

Accessibility Map

This accessibility map highlights the steep gradients around the Zoo so you can see which pathways are more accessible.

You can print this out and bring along with you, or we'll have a copy for you when you arrive.

When you’re at the Zoo, please reach out to our lovely staff and volunteers if you require any help or advice to ensure you have a positive experience.

Access to Zoo Experiences

Not all of our special Zoo experiences are fully accessible. For instance, some of our close Encounters aren't accessible by wheelchair. To check whether an experience you're interested in is accessible to you, please contact us on 04 381 6755 or at wellingtonzoo@wellingtonzoo.com.
