Wellington Zoo’s four rescued Kororā (Little Blue Penguins) are now all settled into Meet the Locals He Tuku Aroha, our brand new walk-through precinct!
Prior to the opening of the new area, Keepers discovered that one of the Kororā, Matekai, had laid two eggs and was sitting on them with her mate, Bandit. Moving day was delayed until we could candle the eggs – a process which shows whether eggs are fertile. As the eggs were not fertile, Matekai and Bandit were able to move into the new habitat, joining Squidge and Malteser.
Penguin Point, designed to evoke Wellington’s south coast, is the entry point to Meet the Locals He Tuku Aroha. You can spot the Kororā devouring a helping of fish at the daily 3pm Penguin Talk, and learn all about these shy and precious native birds that share our coastline.
