Wellington Zoo is an Enriching Local Curriculum (ELC) provider, funded by the Ministry of Education. This means we can offer unique learning experiences to schools and ECE groups at reduced prices. Check out our exciting new Learning Workshops for schools and ECE.
A visit to Wellington Zoo makes learning real. Get close to amazing animals to learn about both exotic and local species, gain an understanding of the role of a progressive zoo and discover what you can do to care for animals and the environment. We offer both facilitated Learning Workshops with our experienced Zoo Educators, and also Self-Guided School Visits at the same subsidised rates.
ELC Sessions
ELC Rates
As an Enriching Local Curriculum provider, our ELC Learning Workshops and Self-Guided School Visits are offered at a special subsidised rate. This includes Zoo entry and a Learning Workshop with our Zoo Educators (if applicable).

- $8 per parent/adult helper
- Teacher & teacher aides are free of charge
* Please note, Zoo Crew annual memberships may not be used in conjunction with ELC visits.
ELC Learning Workshops
Our exciting range of ELC Learning Workshop topics makes planning your visit and meeting your learning objectives easy. These facilitated learning experiences cater for ākonga from years 1-13 with a range of topics to help you bring your classroom learning alive.
We also offer specialised Year 13 Biology-specific topics such as Primate Evolution, Animal Behaviour, Speciation, Homeostasis, and Animal Behaviour Observations (for Bio 3.1).

Early Learning Experiences: My First Zoo Visit
Start your ākonga’s Zoo learning journey with a tailored Learning Workshop for ECE groups! Learn how the Zoo cares for animals, and how we can all help in our own way. Suitable for older ECE learners, approx. 3-4 years old.
This workshop qualifies for ELC Rates.

Self-guided School Visits & Pre-School Groups
You are welcome to visit in your own time, at your own pace. Self-guided school groups (years 1-13) qualify for ELC rates when you book ahead. We can supply a fun learning activity to help you focus your visit as you explore the Zoo, if you wish.
Please note: self-guided ECE/pre-school groups are not eligible for ELC rates.
Tertiary
We also offer tailored learning opportunities for tertiary groups. Talk to us about how we can make your course wild!

Bring the Zoo to your Online Classroom
Can’t make it to the Zoo but still want to learn from one of our Zoo Educators? Talk to us about an online Zoo Learning Workshop! Online sessions start from only $100 per class (up to 35 learners) and include pre- and post-session activities, and a 30-minute video call with a Zoo Educator live from the Zoo.
