Wellington Zoo’s vision is to ignite a zoo revolution and we are committed to ‘leading the way’ and ‘saving animals in the wild’. This includes providing expert animal care for the Zoo’s animal collection and native wildlife that is brought to The Nest Te Kōhanga for treatment. The Nest Te Kōhanga is a unique part of the Wellington Zoo’s offer to our community. It helps us to connect people with animals and provides our visitors with an unrestricted view of our Veterinary Science team in action. 

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a qualified Veterinary Technician to join our team. Reporting to The Nest Te Kōhanga Practice Manager the successful candidate will need to be confident engaging with our visitors whilst assisting with veterinary procedures. They will also need to be available to work on a roster based on 80 hours worked over a four week period that will include some weekends. We are looking for someone that shares our values, has a strong green furry heart and cares about animals, people, and our environment.The Veterinary Technician will assist The Nest Te Kōhanga team with animal health management, preventative healthcare, maintaining animal records and they will work closely with managers and staff across the Animal Care team. 

To be considered for this opportunity you will need to have:

  • A current veterinary technician qualification that is recognised in New Zealand
  • Minimum 2 years of clinical vet nursing experience
  • Demonstrated veterinary nursing and technician experience. Experience with wildlife and exotic animals is an advantage
  • The ability to work unsupervised
  • A proactive attitude supported by an attention to detail and excellent observational and time management skills
  • A good level of PC literacy and familiarity with medical record systems. 
  • Excellent communication and visitor engagement skills.

This is a permanent Wellington-based role and applicants must have NZ residency or a valid NZ work permit.
